I have a simple task; migrate a bog-standard LAMP from a co-located physical server (bricks and mortar) to the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) architecture (virtual). The physical server provides core business services so the success criteria for the migration are minimising functional distortion and minimising down-time. In other words, a virtually seamless transition.

If you can see this post it means my normally steady stream of balderdash and nonsense has dried to a trickle. Don’t worry! I’m alive but working on other things, likely focused on generating income. This means I cannot pay much attention to my blog but doesn’t mean I’m ignoring my delightful readers.

Your patience may be rewarded. If you want to know more, ask!

I decided to spend part of my day off twiddling with the blog. I finished the Javascript to make threaded comments work properly, so the page doesn’t reload when you click “Reply” blanking any text you had typed. Sorry about that.

If you look at the top-right corner of the page, you will find a link that reverses video. The blog remembers your setting in a cookie. Which way do you like best? Thanks to Christan Montoya for the inspiration.

You can now reply to other people’s comments as well as the main post. Have a go.

Today there’s a major voluntary effort between the WordPress developers and the wider WordPress user community to test for and hopefully repair bugs in the upcoming 2.0.4 and 2.1 releases of WordPress.

Here’s my contribution. My thanks to leftjustified and the other bug-hunters, without whom all this would have been far less fun. You guys rock!

Apologies for the down-time over the last couple of days. This blog has been undergoing a major metamorphosis under the covers so I thought it best to hit the big red switch.

This blog now runs stock WordPress 2.0.3 instead of my previous, heavily-customised version Liberated WordPress 1.5.2. The experience of upgrading has been one less of education than simply doing what I know, properly. I now have a lovely Subversion repository containing all the changes I have made since the blog went down – a track of the entire upgrade procedure.

Dear Igor et. al,

PAY ATTENTION! YOU ARE IN TROUBLE. YOU ARE BREAKING BRITISH LAW.

For some time now, you and others like you have been attempting to use my blog to sell drugs. The drugs you sell are available only by prescription in the UK which is where I am based. Your attempts to sell drugs only available by prescription through my blog is breaking British law, or worse, asking me to break it for you. so YOU MUST STOP.

My blog has a readership which includes children, my own in particular. Was it your childhood dream to make a living pushing pills to kids, Igor?

May I help you do something better with your life?

Yours sincerely,

Paul Mitchell a.k.a Libertus, Sheffield, UK

I have removed Experts Exchange from the links. I no longer use the site, nor recommend that others do so. It has become too advertising heavy, resorting to popups which evade the anti-popup measures in my browser.

That is simply too much. I am WorkingJourneyman no more.

For a while, I have had this nagging doubt as to the reliability of my e-mail service. I get e-mail, from all my known addresses, but I’m never entirely sure I’m getting everything I’m sent. If anyone is getting email sent to me bounced back, please let me know here.

I pay for my email. Not much but I do pay, and I pay for a 100% reliable service or not at all. I suspect my current service is not 100% but have little to no evidence for it. Plans to change are afoot. I’m sorry this is still an ongoing problem 2 years down the line. I’m not confident messing around with e-mail systems.

If you have mailed me, cheque, if bounced, let me know here, please.

Update 22:50 Hotmail was junking all my libertini e-mails. That solves one mystery.
