My Xubuntu Linux workstation runs Xfce desktop. I like the simplicity, although the limitations can be very frustrating. I use the command-line shell a lot! A picture tells a thousand words…

My Linux/Xfce Desktop

My Linux/Xfce Desktop

I use this computer for all my development work, which involves editing code files, maintaining content databases and communicating with programs running on both my own and other’s computers across the internet. I had the choice of many advanced graphical user interfaces to perform these tasks. I am deliberately using the computer more directly and so, bereft of the abstraction a good GUI provides, feeling the pain a little.

I’m sure I could configure the machine better had I more time available. For now, I’ll stick to my shells, a web browser and the occasional KDE application, without which I would be totally stuffed. Everything else works by typing in commands. The old way. Again.

This time around, in colour with moving pictures and scalable text. Technology, eh? Always on the up.

  1. Time With A GNOME On My Desktop

I tried out the GNOME desktop environment for Ubuntu Linux. It lasted about three hours, which was more than it deserved.

Gnomes belong out in the garden near the pond.

  3. Indeed. GNOMEs are pretty to look at but pretty much useless for anything else.
